R – extremely rare

Description

Matteuccia struthiopteris was considered as Regionally Extinct (RE) in Luxembourg, until 2017, when the Ostrich Fern was (re)discovered by K.-G. Gessner near Dondelange. The presence of M. struthiopteris along a hedgerow is probably the result of a garden escape.

Further information

Lycopodium clavatum is considered as ‘critically endangered’. In the last decades however, the species was no longer observed in its known locations, and it was considered as possibly extinct!

Fortunately Jean Werner and Thierry Mahévas, investigating the bryophytes in the valley of the Mandelbaach near Brouch/Mersch found a new site of this extremely rare species in spring 2013, more than 20 years after the last observation made in 1992 in the north of Luxembourg (Krippel & Colling 2014: 110).

More information about Lycopodium clavatum in Luxembourg was compiled by Krippel & Massard (2019).

Further information

The latest related observation in literature was made by L. Reichling in 1988 near Berdorf. Unfortunately, the last known site in Luxembourg was definitely destroyed in 2004 (Schwenninger in litt.); so the status has to be revised from CR – critical to RE – regionally extinct.

Map of Equisetum x litorale

Description

Equisetum × litorale Kühl. ex Rupr. is the hybrid of Equisetum arvense × E. fluviatile. It was first discovered for Luxembourg in 2003 [Noertrange, Säitertbaach (60,5/117,4; K8.11.23), near the river, 27.8.2003 (Y. Krippel, A. Scheer) (hb. Krippel)].
Equisetum × litorale is however easily disregarded, as the hybrid is – from the morphologic point of view – often similar to one of the parents (Jeßen 1987, Lambinon et al. 1992). The frequency in the region is considered of being rare, but is probably underestimated. E. × litorale is known from the neighbouring countries, for example in the Saarland (Parent 1997, Sauer 1993) and in the French Ardennes (Bizot 2000).
